Obtaining an Ontario Driver’s License

To be allowed to drive legally in Ontario, you need to have an Ontario Driver’s License. To get it, you have to take a series of tests that will prove your knowledge in safety and experience on the road. There are certain rules that must be followed to get an Ontario Driver’s License.

Learn the Rules

You must be sixteen years of age or older to obtain an Ontario Driver’s License. You must already have some form of ID to apply for a driver’s license. There are fees you will need to pay when you go in to get your driver’s license. These are due at the time of service. You can obtain various types of Ontario Driver’s Licenses, and whichever one you get will depend on what kind of vehicle you are driving.

You will have to take a vision test to prove that you can see properly to drive safely on the road. Passing a knowledge test is mandatory so you can show that you know the rules of the road to keep yourself and everyone around you safe.

License Types

There are various types of licenses that you can obtain when you get your Ontario driver’s license. This includes Class A; A with condition R, B, C, D, E, F , G, G1, G2, M, M1, M2; M with condition L; and M2 with condition L. The various license types are in place to ensure that if you are driving a specialized vehicle, you have the authority to do so. This means that if you are driving a school bus, you will need a Class E license. If you are driving a motorcycle, you need a Class M driver’s license, and so on. Getting an Ontario Driver’s License is not difficult, but you are expected to follow the specific rules to your specific license class, or you can be fined or be given a ticket.

If you are driving through Ontario or in Ontario but you are not from here, you do not need to obtain an Ontario Driver’s License just for a short trip. However, you must have a valid license from wherever you reside in order to drive legally in the area. You will be required to present your valid driver’s license if you are stopped for any reason. If you are moving to Ontario and want to obtain an Ontario Driver’s License, you can do so, but you must have a minimum of twelve months of driving experience to obtain an application to get said license.
